Performance of Chillers Improved by 17.0%

Background

The cooling power to a government facility is supplied by three direct seawater cooled chillers with 600TR cooling capacity in total.

Chlorine is used to minimize the development of biological fouling caused by the growth of micro-organism and macro-organism. However its concentration is governed by rules due to the harmful effect imposed to the water environment. As a result the biological fouling problem cannot be eliminated.

In order to improve the COP of those chillers, AquaKLEAR is installed to Chiller No. 2 to see its effect on biofouling. The condenser tubes were inspected and the condition is shown in picture 1 before switching on the AquaKLEAR.

Result

After one year of operation, the condenser cover of Chiller no. 2 was dismantled for tube inspection. Tubes were clean and biofouling was not found on the tube surface (picture 2).

The data logged by the existing BMS shows there is a 17.0% of energy efficiency improved in Chiller No. 2 since the installation of AquaKLEAR after one year of study.
